The Morley problem

A shower that barely runs, blamed on the hill

Morley sits high, so there is genuinely less head here than down in the valley. But that gets blamed for an awful lot of poor pressure that actually has nothing to do with it.

  • Old service pipes fur up insideA century-old iron or lead supply can have half its bore left. The pressure is fine at the boundary and useless at the tap.
  • Stopcocks left part closedCosts nothing to check and fixes a surprising number of complaints.
  • Leaks on the supplyUnderground, invisible, and quietly adding to your bill. The meter tells you before the garden does.
  • Lead still in the groundCommon in the Victorian terraces here, often a short section between boundary and house.
  • Measure before you spendA flow rate test at the kitchen tap costs ten minutes and tells you whether a pump, a new supply or neither is the answer.

What customers say

Word for word from customer reviews — nothing rewritten, nothing tidied up.

★★★★★

Had a great experience and would 100% recommend! We had a leak in our washer and a previous leak under the bathroom sink. The team was able to address both issues and also caught a small leak in our washer hose that could have caused problems later. You can tell they put a lot of honesty and care into their work. We’ve had our fair share of bad plumber experiences, but with them, we really appreciated how we were shown the root of each problem and kept informed throughout. They also made sure to test everything multiple times to ensure the issues were fully resolved.

Areas covered

Morley, Churwell and the Ardsleys

A town built on a ridge, mostly in Victorian stone, with a lot of original supply pipework still buried under the front paths. That combination throws up a very particular set of plumbing problems, and it is most of what we deal with.

FAQs

Straight answers before you ring

Are you actually available 24 hours?

Yes. Nights, weekends and bank holidays. A burst pipe doesn’t check the calendar, so the phone line doesn’t either.

My water pressure is terrible. Is that just where I live?

Not usually, and this is worth knowing. Morley sits high, so there is less head than lower down the valley, but that alone rarely explains a bad shower. More often it is an old iron or lead service pipe that has furred up internally, a partly closed stopcock, or a leak on the supply. Measuring the flow rate at the kitchen tap tells you which in about ten minutes.

What is a supply pipe and whose is it?

It is the pipe running from the boundary into your house. From the boundary stop tap inwards it is the property owner’s responsibility, not the water company’s. That catches people out, particularly when there is a leak under the front path and they are waiting for somebody else to come and fix it.

How do I know if I still have lead pipework?

Look at the pipe coming into the stopcock. Lead is dull grey, soft enough to scratch with a coin and has swollen joints rather than crisp fittings. Plenty of Victorian terraces round here still have a lead section between the boundary and the house even where the inside has been renewed.

Can the supply pipe be replaced without digging up the garden?

Often, yes. Moling pulls a new pipe through underground from a small hole at each end rather than trenching the whole run. It depends on the ground, the route and what else is buried along it, which is why we look before quoting rather than after.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Boiler work, gas connections, servicing and safety checks are all carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ask for the card at the door.

Do I get a price before you start?

Always. We look, explain what’s wrong and give you a number. If something unexpected shows up once we’re into it we stop and talk to you rather than adding it on quietly.

What should I do while I’m waiting?

Get the stopcock off — kitchen sink cupboard usually, cellar head in a lot of the older terraces here. Anything wet near sockets or the fuse board, kill that circuit if it’s safe.

Which areas do you cover?

Morley, Churwell, Gildersome, Drighlington, Adwalton, Tingley, Woodkirk, East and West Ardsley, Thorpe on the Hill, Lofthouse, Robin Hood and New Farnley.
